Reverend Ernest Velazco Jr, age 83 of Marion, passed away on Sunday, September 5,
2021, at the Marion General Hospital. He was born in Bronx, New York on August 25, 1938 to
his late parents Ernesto Velazco, Sr. and Laura Torres. He would eventually marry the love of
his life Reverend Maria Carmen Velazco on March 30, 1957.
Ernest graduated from Manhattan High School of Aviation Trades in 1956. He served his
country for 8 years in the United States Army Reserve. In 1962 he received an Honorable
Discharge. Ernest had a variety of jobs in his work life. He began his working career driving a
taxi in New York City. After his move to Ohio in 1967, he worked for the old Bargain City
through the mid 60’s. He would go on to work for Pennington Bread Company from 1969 to
1973. He also worked briefly in accounting before changing career paths. His last two jobs were
working at the Marion Power Shovel from 1974 until 1988. He then would work until retirement
at Whirlpool from 1988 to 2001.
Ernest was a “man of faith” and a member of the Marion Christian Center for 38 years.
He enjoyed traveling and ministering at other churches in different cities, states and other
countries. In his retirement, he spent much of his time studying the Bible and reading religious
literature.
Ernest is survived by his son; Mark (Joyce) Velazco and his children Angie and Andrew,
daughter; Loré Velazco, his brother; Manny of Arizona, sister; Rosie Perez of Marysville, OH,
and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Maria Velazco, his son Steven Ernest
Velazco, brothers, Danny and Rafael, and his sister Priscilla Lopez.
A memorial service will be held Saturday September 25 at 4:00 pm, at Marion Christian
Center, 1550 Richland Rd., Marion, and will be officiated by Dr. James Stevens. Friends can
greet the family from 2:30-4:00.
