Robert McCrery Obituary

Robert Scott McCrery (72) of Marion, Ohio passed away unexpectedly at his home on Monday February 19, 2024. Scott was born at Marion General Hospital on June 22, 1951, to Robert V. and Nancy E. (nee Ell) McCrery. A 1969 graduate of Harding High School, Scott was a retiree of the Whirlpool Corporation where he worked for more than forty years.
He is proceeded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife of thirty-seven years Laura (nee Garver) McCrery, his children Brett McCrery (Brandi); Megan Holland (Kevin); and Matt (Lisa) Holland all of Marion, his eight grandchildren Caden; Grace; Addison; Ollie; Jack; Logan; Garrett; and Brandon, his brother Dana (Janet) McCrery, a nephew Matt (Nicole) McCrery, and countless others who loved him.
While his family mourns his tragic loss, it seems fitting that he died on President’s Day. There was no one more supportive of Marion Harding High School, or prouder to be a Prexy. He played baseball at Harding and continued his days on the diamond playing men’s fastpitch softball. A successful catcher on several area teams, including the Marion Sims Brothers team that captured the 1974 Class A State Championship, Scott was also the first person from Marion to compete in an ASA Open National Tournament playing for Ashland ESS. Following his days in uniform, he passed along his passion for fastpitch to hundreds of young people in Marion.  Last season marked his 23rd consecutive year as a member of the Harding and/or Grant MS softball coaching staff. He loved his players as his own and his coaching and guidance ensured his teams were always better at the end of the season than when they started. He was also known in the Marion area for his success on the lanes. Spending much of his prime bowling several nights a week in all three houses, his interest led him to a long-time coaching position on the Harding Bowling staff. He was there when the team finished the 2021-2022 season as the Ohio Division I State Runners-Up. His service to the school and athletic program was honored by his 2023 induction into the Harding High School Athletic Hall of Fame - something that brought him great pride.
That all pales in comparison to the pride he had in his grandchildren and their many achievements. He always made it a point to be present at their events and provided constant love and encouragement. He was appreciated by all who knew him for his selfless and caring ways.  Always quick with a laugh or a joke, he was a joy to be around. He chose to live his life without fanfare and would be embarrassed by this remembrance, but those of us who love him know he deserves it.
Friends will be welcomed at Boyd’s funeral home this Saturday February 24, 2024 from 1 to 4pm. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, dog and cat food donations be made to the Marion County Humane Society. Monetary donations should be forwarded to the Harding High School Athletic Boosters.
We’re gonna miss you Pops. We love you.
Honor to Thee, Live Forever!
