Obituary

Damon Ault, age 84 of Marion, died of a broken heart on Monday, August 28, 2023.

Damon was the youngest of four children born to Virgil and Orpha Ault on June 18, 1939.  Damon graduated from Marion Harding in 1957 when he was 17 years old.  As soon as he turned 18 years old, he went to work for General Telephone and Electronics (GTE) as an entry level installer.  Damon excelled at his job and after several promotions, retired early as a senior electronic engineer after 34 years when he was in his early 50’s.

In 1960, Damon married the love of his life, MaryLou Rank.  Together they raised two children in the same Oakland Heights neighborhood where Damon grew up.  Over the years, Damon served as a City Councilman, was a 32-degree member of the Masonic Lodge, a member of the Marion Y-Men and attended Oakland United Methodist Church.

After retiring early, Damon and MaryLou were able to fulfill their dream of traveling the country in a motorhome.  In their travels, they fell in love with the Big “O”, a motorhome/mobile home park in Okeechobee, Florida that was close to their son, John.  They sold the motorhome and bought a permanent park model that they named, “The Last Resort” and for many years were “Snowbirds” spending winters at the Big “O” and summers in Marion.

In 2020 after 60 years of marriage, Damon lost his lifelong partner.  MaryLou suffered a severe stroke and was hospitalized for several months at Riverside Hospital and then Country Club Skilled Nursing Home in Delaware, Ohio.  At 80 years old, Damon made the drive back and forth every day from Marion to Columbus and then Marion to Delaware to hold her hand and make sure that she was being cared for properly.

In additions to MaryLou, Damon was preceded in death by his parents and his oldest brother, Bob Ault.

Damon will be missed by his only son, John (Julie) Ault Port St. Lucie, Florida, his sister, Joan Couts of Marion, his brother, Ron Ault of Galion, his brother-in-law, Jim (Vicki) Rank of Marion, his neighbors, Doug and April Short, whom without their help, Damon would not have been able to live independently for as long as he did, Amber Ault (former son-in-law, Bruce Wheeler of Madison, Wisconsin).

Friends and family may come to honor Damon’s life from 10am to 11am on Friday, September 1, 2023 at Boyd Funeral Home.  A graveside service will follow starting at 11:30am at Chapel Heights Memory Gardens.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to: Alzheimer’s Association, P.O. Box 96011, Washington, DC 20090-6011.  The Boyd Funeral Home is honored to be serving the Ault family.

John would like to give a special thanks to: Doug and April Short for caring for Damon and MaryLou for years.  Vicki Rank for making sure Damon got some home cooked meals.  Mike Fogle, Lay Pastor from Oakland United Methodist Church and the entire staff from Kingston Assisted Care; they are the best.
