Our beloved Dad, Grandpa, and Great Grampy, Ernest “Ernie” Denney, passed away at the age of 90 on January 9, 2025, at Kingston Residence of Marion with his children surrounding him. He was born on May 12, 1934, to the late Ernest S. Denney and Stella M. (Thacker) Denney in Ewington, Ohio. Ernie lived most of his adult life in Marion, attending Harding High School and working at the former B.F. Goodrich – Parker Hannifin Plant for 35 years, retiring in 1996.
In his younger years, he worked in the southern Ohio coal mines and sawmills alongside his father. He also was a “farm hand,” helping the Wilson, Sappington, and Fogle families of Big Island. Additionally, he worked with his uncle and brother in his uncle’s homebuilding business. He was very talented in his home workshop, making all kinds of furniture and crafts for family and friends. He was extremely meticulous in everything he accomplished. Being of Methodist faith, Ernie was a member of Meeker United Methodist Church for many years, and more recently transferred that membership to Prospect Street UMC in Marion. On January 15, 1954, he married Norma J. Calbert in Marion at the First Presbyterian Church Chapel, with Rev. Howard Orewiler officiating. They were married for nearly 71 years prior to Norma’s passing just sixteen days prior.
He is survived by his two children, son Steven R. (Deb) Denney of Eatonton, Georgia, and daughter Julia Ann Denney of Delaware, Ohio. He also has three surviving grandsons: Dr. Evan (Kristen) Bayles of Dayton, Kentucky, Matthew (Elizabeth) Denney of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Christopher (Kayla) Denney of Columbus, Ohio. He adored his two great granddaughters Tobin Paige Bayles and Quincy Kay Bayles. He will be missed greatly by several nieces and nephews. Along with the recent passing of his wife Norma, he was preceded in death by his parents and brothers E. Bryan and Ronald H. Denney, and sisters G. Nadine Baker and Shelba J. Stoneburner, along with his nephew Eddie Lee Baker.
There will be a service for Ernie at the Boyd Funeral Home on January 14, 2025, at 11am with Pastor Kathy Herr officiating. There will be a private burial following the service at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family requests donations be made in Ernie’s honor to the Meeker United Methodist Church in Big Island, Prospect Street United Methodist Church in Marion, or a charity of the donor’s choice. The Boyd Funeral Home is honored to be assisting the family of Ernest E. Denney in their time of mourning. The family would like to give a very special thank you to the Staff at Kingston Residence and Capital City Hospice for all of their help and compassion.
