Joan Victoria Hawkins, age 72 of Marion, passed away on Friday, September 10, 2021, at the Marion General Hospital.
Joan was born on March 2, 1949, to the late Dallas and Barbara Beam in Crestline, Ohio. On November 18, 1970, she married the love of her life Keith L. Hawkins in Marion, Ohio. Joan and Keith recently celebrated 50 years of loving marriage together.
Joan’s choice of studies at the Ohio State University, Social Work, suited her natural gifts of genuine care and love for fellow humans despite any circumstances. Joan was uniquely equipped to help others and gave selflessly in her work, personal life, and family life. Those lucky enough to know her not only benefited from her generosity and giving, but also from the lessons she unintentionally gave us on being better humans by her example alone. There are those who preach in front of pulpits with words and those like Joan whose living provide a spiritual message as worthy as biblical passages or prayers. After retiring from Marion County Children’s Services, Joan and Keith were able to dedicate more time for their love of traveling the United States and beyond, satisfying a thirst for adventure that was evident in the myriad of photographs of them skydiving, rock climbing, kayaking, hiking and more. Joan’s true passions were her husband Keith, her Grandchildren (who called her JoJo), her Children (whom she meant the world to), the rest of her family, her relationship with the Lord, new experiences, and the Marion Tallgrass Trail, where you would most likely find Joan on a beautiful Ohio day. Joan will truly be missed by family and friends, even though she was too perfect for this imperfect world.
Joan was preceded in death by her brothers, Michael Beam and Carl Beam, and sister Marjorie.
Those who will cherish her memories are too many to list but they include her husband of 50 years: Keith Hawkins of Marion, Ohio; son: Stephen Hawkins and fiance Jaclyn Mulvey, of Austin, Texas; grandchildren: Eli Hawkins and Jet Hawkins of Austin, Texas; son: Bryan Hawkins of Everett, Washington and his two beagles Joey and Lily; her sister: Carol Gallion of Cardington, Ohio; loving stepmother: Buela Beam, who raised her; sisters: Lina Beam, Loretta Beam, Theresa Beam, Norma Beam and Linda Beam-Senecal of Ontario, Canada; brothers: Leonard Beam of Ontario, Canada and Tom Beam of Ontario, Canada.
Friends and family may come to honor Joan’s beautiful life on Friday, September 17, 2021, from 10am to 12pm at the Central Baptist Church, 2816 Marion-Waldo Road, Marion, Ohio 43302. A funeral service will follow starting at 12pm at the church. Burial will follow service at the Marion Cemetery. Donations may be given in Joan’s memory to the Marion Tallgrass Trail Foundation or a cause of their choosing. The Boyd Funeral Home is honored to be serving the Hawkins’ family.
