Obituary

Kenneth William (aka Bill) Wertz, age 80 of Marion, passed away on Friday, August 4, 2023 at home surrounded by his loving family.

Bill was born on January 25, 1943 to the late Mr. and Mrs. Hoy and Thelma (Wakins) Wertz.  On November 6, 1960, he married his high school sweetheart, Patricia Ann Wolbert.

Bill started working as an auxiliary policeman in 1967.  Then, Wertz started with the Marion County Sheriff’s Office on June 8, 1969 as a dispatcher.  In August of 1970, he received his promotion to road patrol deputy.  Bill’s first promotion to supervisor came in July of 1972.  He was promoted from Deputy Sheriff to Sergeant at that time.  He continued his advancement within the office when he was promoted to lieutenant in December of 1976.  His final promotion to Captain came in June of 1977.

Since 1978, Captain Wertz performed many tasks including running the uniform road patrol division of the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, Courthouse Security Services, Child Support Enforcement Law Enforcement Unit and several tasks concerning the civil process division of the sheriff’s office.  Highly trained and decorated, Captain Wertz holds honors for meritorious acts of bravery, officer of the year, and other accolades from various agencies and individuals, pointing to his exemplary career in law enforcement.  Captain Wertz has received several hundreds of hours of training in the areas of management, road patrol operations, court security and office operations.  Captain K.W. “Bill” Wertz retired on Friday, September 1, 2000 after serving 31 years of service at the Marion County Sheriff’s Office.

After retiring from the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, he enjoyed spending a lot of time watching his grandchildren and great grandchildren playing their sports.  Bill will truly be missed by family and friends.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter, Melissa Adams, his brother, Don Wertz, his two sister-in-laws: Harlena Wertz and Judi Young.

Those who will cherish is memories include his wife of 62 years, Pat Wertz of Marion, Ohio; his daughter, Regina Glaeser (Wertz); his brother, Denny Wertz, his sister, Doris Lang of Colorado, his two sister-in-laws: Emma Jo Wolbert of Alabama and Marilyn Wertz of Marion, Ohio; his four grandchildren: Michele, Randy, Jr., Bruce and Anmarie; and his nine great grandchildren.

Friends and family may come to honor Captain Bill’s life from 1pm to 4pm on Thursday, August 10, 2023 at Dayspring Wesleyan Church, 2431 Marion-Mt. Gilead Road, Marion, Ohio 43302. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, August 10, 2023 at Dayspring Church starting at 4pm with Pastor Jerry Campbell officiating.  A private family burial will be scheduled at a later time. In lieu of flowers, donations may be given in Bill’s memory to: Dayspring Wesleyan Primetimers, 2431 Marion-Mt. Gilead Road, Marion, Ohio 43302.  The Boyd Funeral Home is honored to be serving the Wertz family.
