Levinia Hornsby Obituary

Early on August 19th, Syd Hornsby’s faith became sight as she entered into the presence of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.  Born in Columbus, Ohio on May 13, 1936 to Louis and Sarah (Byers) Cain, Syd was the older sister to 8 siblings, all of whom she loved and helped to care for.  She became “Sis” to all of them, and when she tired of being called that for so many years, she changed her name a bit to “Syd”.

On May 3, 1968 she married John Hornsby in Delaware, Ohio.  They later settled in Waldo where their son, John, was born and raised.

Syd was a mother, grandmother, homemaker, housekeeper, babysitter, Sunday School teacher and good friend to many.  She devoted herself to meeting the needs of others and especially enjoyed supplying them with pies and other homemade goodies.  Syd was a charter member of Central Baptist Church, a beloved Sunday School teacher to many, and “Mama Syd” to special friends, Tom and Ronest Winterbower.  She was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by all who were blessed to have known and served with her.

Preceding Syd in death are her parents, her husband, John, and five siblings: Sophie Nelson, Gustie Stephens, Susie Nelson, Eddie Cain and David Cain.

She is survived by her son, John (Miranda) Hornsby of Ravenna and her four grandchildren, Sarah, Shaina, J.T., and Jacob.  A stepson, Craig Hornsby, of Marengo also survives.  There are three surviving siblings, Dorothy Gillenwater and Butch Cain of Mason, W. Va. and Lavern (Ron) Syrus of Dover, FL, as well as many nieces and nephews.  Syd is also survived by her special friend, Jeff Cummins, who showed her great love and devotion through many years.

A special thanks to the nurses, staff and residents of Presidential Post Acute for the love and care given to Syd over the past five years.

Calling hours will be at the Boyd Funeral Home on Thursday, August 26th from 1:00-2:00pm with the service to follow at 2:00pm.  Pastor Ryan Strother will officiate with burial at the Waldo Cemetery.  Gifts in honor and memory of Syd may be made to Central Baptist Church in Marion.
