Mabel Jean Grimes, 90, of Marion, OH, passed away on Monday January 27, 2025, at the Marion Valley Post Acute facility. On September 9, 1934, her late parents, Samuel Vaughn Swartz and Arvilla Bernadine (Johns) Swartz, would welcome her into the world in Upper Sandusky, OH.
Mabel graduated from Upper Sandusky High School in 1952. She worked at B.F. Goodrich, before moving to Flagstaff, Arizona to work with Native Americans on their reservations. She became an ordained minister in DeSoto, TX in 1985. She would serve at a church in Somerton, AZ for two years, helping the Cocopah Indians. She would later move to Polacca, AZ, where she was a pastor on the Hopi Indian Reserve until her retirement in 1995. Mabel would return to Marion and volunteer with Marion General Hospital with both the hospital and hospice.
Mabel is preceded in death by her parents, brothers, Arnold, Harold, James, Clifford, Cloyd, Boyd, and Robert Swartz, and her sisters, Clara Tharp, Florence Owens, Wilda Grimes, Patsy Smith, and her twin sister Marilyn Harris.
She is survived by her sons; Gary (Jill) Grimes, and Larry Grimes, brother, Kenneth (Fran) Swartz, and her grandchildren, Kevin (Erin O’Keeffe) Grimes, Kari (Chad Roberts) Grimes, and Kyle Grimes.
The Grimes family would like to invite Mabel’s loved ones and friends to join them for calling hours on Friday, January 31, 2025, from 10 to 12 pm at the Boyd Funeral Home. There will be a funeral service at 12 p.m. The interment service will take place immediately after at the Marion Cemetery. The family would like to thank the staff at Wyndmoor of Marion and Marion Valley Post Acute as well as the Staff at Gentiva Hospice for the care provided to Mabel. In Lieu of flowers, donations can be made out to Gentiva or Ohio Health Hospice. The Boyd Funeral Home is honored to be assisting the family of Mabel Grimes in their time of mourning.
