Nancy Elizabeth Earl

     Nancy Elizabeth Earl, age 81 of Marion OH, passed away on June 18, 2022 at Marion General Hospital. She was born September 10, 1940 to the late George Louis Earl and Mary Ellen (Retterer) Earl. Nancy was preceded in death by her brother Lon and survived by her sister Virginia of Marion OH and brother Richard of Lebanon OH. Other relatives are her nephews Dennis Earl of Conway SC and Marc Earl of Chesterland Ohio and nieces Meredith Earl of Morrisville NC and Catherine Earl of Columbus OH. Nancy was a 1958 graduate of Claridon High School where she served as class valedictorian. After graduating, Nancy attended The Ohio State University where she received a degree in Home Economics with a minor in Mathematics in 1962. Later in her career, she received a graduate degree from the University of Connecticut in Storrs CT. After spending one year teaching in Baltimore MD, Nancy was on a tour of Europe when she discovered the Department of Defense was hiring teachers for overseas assignments. She pursued this opportunity and was immediately hired. This led to a career of over 30 years teaching at military bases and government locations in France, Turkey, Japan and Germany. While at these locations, Nancy was able to visit and tour sites all over Europe, Asia and Africa. Upon her retirement, Nancy returned to Marion OH to pursue her various interests. She developed an interest in family history and became the go-to source for detailed genealogy information about the Earl and Retterer families. Nancy toured both the United States and Europe and was in contact with sources all around the world to gather this information. Nancy also pursued an interest in gardening and her skills in the garden of her home in Marion were well known by her family and neighbors. Nancy was an accomplished photographer and her excellent photos documenting her varied trips during her teaching career and after were on display at her home, at the homes of family members and at numerous events in Marion. Her photos of family gatherings and outings are treasured mementos of those who survive her. She was an avid Ohio State Buckeyes fan and enjoyed attending football and basketball games.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                             An open visitation will be held at Boyd’s Funeral home on June 30, 2022 from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Claridon United Methodist Church on July 1, 2022 starting at 11:00 am. Friends and family members are encouraged to share memories of Nancy at this event and stay for a meal afterwards. Burial will be at the Claridon cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation be made to A Special Wish of Northeast Ohio.
