Richard Record Obituary

Richard “Rick” L. Record, passed away at the age of 84 on May 28, 2025, at Presidential Post Acute nursing facility. His passing was the result of complications after a fall in January. Born to the late Raymond and Ruth (Hurley) Record in Meadville, PA, on January 16, 1941, Rick’s life was a testament to love and unwavering dedication.

His love for swimming ran deep, rooted in childhood days swimming in French Creek in Pennsylvania and later on his high school swim team. He poured his heart into every sport he played, including baseball, softball, basketball, and golf. He cherished growing up close to his cousins, aunts and uncles in the Meadville area. In his younger years, he enjoyed hunting and fishing, especially with his Granddad and later in life with his father-in-law, Earl.

At 18, he moved to Ohio, working as a Machinist for over 28 years on the Erie Lackawanna Railroad, later Conrail. On July 28, 1962, Rick married the love of his life, Phyllis Brake, and they shared over 60 years together, until his death. A Vietnam War veteran, Rick served in the United States Army.

An avid golfer, he achieved the feat of a hole-in-one. Whether golfing or working on cars or lawn mowers, Rick was determined to do his best. As arthritis gradually limited his physical pursuits, Rick found new outlets—puzzles, word finds, watching old movies (especially westerns), car shows and sports. He cherished every moment he spent relaxing in his recliner, surrounded by his grandkids and beloved dogs.

Rick was a devoted husband, a loving father, a cherished father-in-law, and a proud PaPa. He was always available to Lana during her childhood, whether supporting her at sporting events, taking her swimming in the summer with her friends, helping with her paper route, or simply spending time driving around or riding bikes. He enjoyed golfing with his son-in- law Ryan.

Being with his grandkids brought him great joy, and he appreciated attending their school’s Veteran’s Day events with them. His compassion extended beyond his loved ones to the many dogs he cared for over the years, each one holding a special place in his heart.

He was a friend to all and knew no strangers. Always ready to lend a helping hand, Rick’s love and generosity left a mark on everyone who knew him. He often wore a big smile on his face that complemented his bright blue eyes.

Rick was a devoted Christian. He read his Bible daily and had enjoyed reading it in its entirety over a dozen times. He was a long-time member of Emmanual Baptist Church.

Rick’s loss leaves a void in the hearts of his wife, Phyllis, his daughter and son-in-law, Lana (Ryan) Hartpence, his grandchildren, Gwen and Evan, his brother Terry (Maxine) Record, sister-n-law, Pat Pierce and Shirley Gantt, and many nieces and nephews. He is also preceded in death by his in-laws, Earl and Hazel Brake, his sister and brother -in- law, Janice (Jim) McCombs, sister-in-law Martha Cook and brother-in-law and golfing buddy, Darrel Pierce.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to Presidential Acute Rehabilitation for the compassionate care and support extended to Rick during his final days.
